This fabulous couple travelled from their hometown in the Darling Downs to be married at Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast. This was to enable their family and friends, who came from almost every state and territory of Australia to attend. They chose the beautiful Oaks Oasis Resort for their wedding. The Resort is literally just across the road from the beach and many of the rooms offer magnificent views of the coast-line – well on most days anyway!
Unfortunately, the hoped-for sun never eventuated. In fact it was day of light showers, interspersed with heavy rain (which was much better than the predicted major rain event). The downside of the storms was that the planned outside wedding by the lake had to be moved inside, but the upside was some beautifully moody photos taken in the local parks and along the beach-front. (For another example of how dramatic and gorgeously moody rain can make your wedding day, check out this blog post on a wedding at the Moreton Bay Boat Club).
A brilliant splash of colour was added to the location photos by the bride and bridesmaids’ brilliant pink umbrellas, contrasting perfectly with the bridesmaids’ silver-grey dresses.
There were some non-traditional elements for an Australian wedding. Once the bride and groom were ready, they met in the lobby for a “first look”. (The first look occurring before the ceremony is much more common in America). This pre-ceremony “first look” replaced the more Australian traditonal “first look” which occurs when the groom first sees his bride walking down the aisle at the ceremony. Not only was this “first look” less stressful by not being part of the ceremony, but it also meant the couple and their wedding party could do location photos before the ceremony.
After the ceremony, we did do a few more location photos around the venue…in the light rain. The couple then had a chance to relax before moving onto the reception where great food was served in between speeches, cake-cutting and the couple’s first dance as husband and wife.
The whole day was warmly casual and intimate in a framework of stylish and simple elegance.
